I’ve spent more than my fair share of time in the “pit” shooting pics of local and national entertainers for news sites and promotions. This is rewarding and inspiring, as I let the movement of the music or the action on the stage guide my camera. I’m always on the move, finding the best angle for any given moment and being prepared for it, because it might never come again.

While shooting still objects is a far different animal than concert photography, it offers its own rewards and challenges. Finding the way light can bring an object to life is a distinct pleasure that is best handled in a studio environment. Finding the best light in a pratical environment is even demanding, despite how easy it may look! Getting the right image for an given product is not to be taken lightly.
For this Minnesota photographer, covering events for personal or professional communities relies on keeping both eyes open and both cameras ready to capture any moment as it happens. While there is no music to guide where my camera goes, keeping a keen sense of the flow of the day around me is key. It isn’t news photography, but it is documentary journalism and it is all about capturing the story as it happens. Because it only happens once.
